Baby Birth Blessings/Dedication

In the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), babies are celebrated and welcomed into the community as soon as the parents desire their child to be blessed and/or dedicated.  When Jesus was born the Gospel of Luke (Luke 2:22-40) tells us that his parents took him to the Temple to dedicate him and while there Jesus was blessed by Simeon and Anna.  It does not say Jesus was baptized so we emulate this practice by also blessing/dedicating our children who are born into our community.    


The service includes:


  • An opportunity to recognize our parental responsibilities to our children

  • An opportunity to recognize our community responsibilities to our children
  • An opportunity to hear the child's Christian name
  • A promise to the parents and to each other to raise the child to know the values and the stories of Christ and the Holy Scriptures which guide us.
